T’was the Fight Before Christmas: The Council of NicæA…in Verse

 ‘Twas several months before Christmas, when all through Nicæa
 Every deacon was stirring, in the capital of Bithynia
 The invitations were answered and the bishops prepared
 In hopes that Emperor Constantine soon would be there
 The bishops were nestled all snug in their places,
 While sights of persecution were seen on their faces;
 Constantine came in with great pomp and great flair,
 And Eusebius joined him to the right of his chair,
 When there in the court there arose such a clatter,
  Santa sprang from his seat to see what was the matter.
 Arius came in and stood before the council,
 To explain his understanding of the Son non-consubstantial.
 Great Constantine calmed them with his brilliant splendor
 And he opened the council with a word as Christian Emperor,
 The tone that he used was rather quite somber,
 and he exhorted the bishops to argue no longer,
 “Let both of you apologize and receive forgiveness,
 “Let both of you apologize and receive forgiveness,
 For you are in truth of the same thought process.
 For this reason came you Church from the east and the west,
 To Nicæa of Bithynia at my own behest”
 Now to the issue of Arius the council did speed
 Twenty Arian supporters presented their creed
 Arius himself thought Alexander Sabellian
 And Alexander on Arius, “His Word is just an alien”
 The Arians argued there was a time when the Son was not.
 No existence had he until the time by the Father he was begot
 “So we are persecuted,” Arians argued they suffer,
 “he is not part of God, nor any related matter”
 And then, in a twinkling, Athanasius did speed
 at the creed of the Arians as swift as a steed.
 He grabbed the pages and threw them to the ground,
 Shredded the paper, no more to be found.
 “Consubstantial” he cried, in his Coptic dialect,
 Homoousious is proper for all Christians to pay respect;
 A bundle of bishops then joined in the fray,
 And Arius looked like a peddler who was losing the day.
 Santa’s eyes — how they twinkled! Though he stayed quite steady!
 His arms were like canons, his fists at the ready!
 He listed while the arguments went back and forth,
 And he heard “homoiousia” from a bishop in the north.;
 This term was amenable to the Arian and some others,
 Who did not think twice about the issues it offers;
 They tried to appease and bring about concord,
 But the orthodox party would not sign the word.
 One in essence with the Father, yet both without change,
 Not a part, but begotten, begotten not made.
 “All things were made by him” the orthodox shouted,
 “Immutable, unchanging, the Word God uncreated.”
 They spoke many words, and plentiful was their work,
 Then Arius filled the chamber; shouted out like a jerk,
 “The Son is created. He does not know like the Father”
  “He cannot be like God. Why even bother”
 Santa sprang to his feet, gave his opponent a smack,
 And away Arius flew into the ground with a “whack”.
 But I heard him exclaim, ere he ended the fight,
 “Homoousios for Christ, God from God-Light from Light”
